Research On Tropical Rainforests Flourishes In Costa Rica’s Caribbean Lowlands

La Selva Biological Station is operated by the Organization for Tropical Studies and is one of the most important sites in the world for research on tropical rainforests. La Selva connects to the northern base of Braulio Carrillo National Park and is a centerpiece of the San Juan – La Selva Biological Corridor and is located in the “Zona Norte,” the Caribbean lowlands of Costa Rica. While it is predominantly designated for researchers and educational groups, it welcomes tourists visiting the area.

Rich in Biodiveristy

The area encompasses 1,614 hectares (3,988 acres) of old growth and disturbed tropical wet forest. “Disturbed” refers to the fact that no ecosystem is stable. Rainforests are subject to natural turmoil from storms, winds, alterations in rainfall and even volcanic activities. La Selva is no exception.

The species diversity is outstanding as La Selva is home to more than the half of the 886 species of birds in Costa Rica. You can find the Trogon, same family of the famous Quetzal, Marmota (Mot Mot), Rufus Tail Jacamar, the Pale-billed Woodpecker among others. Take a Birding tour, which are offered every day with experienced guides at 8 a.m. who carry powerful lenses for seeing the birds up close.

Expect to see various species of butterflies, frogs, monkeys, along with anteaters and other mammals. Explore the dozens of trails available based on your experience and goals. Go as deep into the forest as desired or stay along the perimeter. The surroundings will change at a moment’s notice from newer to old forest and you may feel like you have travelled back in time.

Night Tours

You can discover nocturnal wildlife on a night tour. Perhaps you will see an ocelot on the River Station bridge. Poisonous snakes are plentiful and can appear at any time, including the Eyelash Viper snake, one of the most venomous in Costa Rica. Wear tall boots while hiking and do not walk barefoot or in sandals outside of the buildings. If you are not experienced, a guide is definitely recommended especially for night tours. Equip yourself with a headlamp, flashlight, and binoculars. Always have water with you and insect repellant. Potable drinking water is available throughout the site.

The numerous trails are marked with codes and can be referenced on the free map from reception. Go as deep into the forest as desired or stay close to base. Arboleda is a great option to see countless bromeliads and orchids. While crossing bridges along the trails, be on the lookout for turtles and crocodiles in the waters below.

Lodging and Dining

Two-story cabins are 1 km from the main reception area, across the Stone Bridge, equipped with twin beds, private bath, fan and balcony if you are on the second floor. If you stay here, you will share the area with many of the peccaries, wild pigs, that enjoy grazing on grass, seeds, roots, small fruits, insects and bugs found there. The cabins are very close to the laboratories and beginning of most of the trails, including Arboleda, an enchanted space best explored at dawn or dusk for great photographic opportunities.

If you are traveling with your family, there are houses equipped with kitchen, two rooms, private bath and terrace. Dorm rooms with bunk beds and shared bathrooms are available for the budget traveller. Meals are served cafeteria style with vegetarian options and include salad, dessert and a natural drink.

Undergraduate and Graduate Studies

If you are a graduate or undergraduate student, you can spend a summer abroad, take an 8-week credit class, or pursue graduate research at La Selva. Students majoring in biology or environmental sciences may research information on how to secure grants or fellowships awarded by the Organization for Tropical Studies, OTS provides international travel, lodging and meals. Find out about available scholarships and fellowships on the website page.

It is very common to see groups of national students on field trip studies at La Selva Biological Station during the weekend. Many stay near the laboraties, and gather together in the dining hall. You might very well see along the trails, collecting specimens for a study.

OTS is going through a time of renewal and growth. Donations and investments help sustain the world’s tropical ecosystems. Support their work in research, education and worldwide policies. You can donate online to La Selva Campaign or on site at the Front Desk.  The personal involvement of people around the world is crucial for the continued work at La Selva.
