Calderon Guardia Hospital´s New East Tower

Calderón Guardia Hospital will have one of the most modern radiology services in the countryDigitization will reduce the printing of results, plates, among other elements that are currently used.

Once Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia Hospital inaugurates its new East Tower in 2020, this medical center will have one of the most modern Radiology and Medical Imaging services in the country.

For Dr. Román Macaya Hayes, executive president of the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS), these changes will substantially improve the diagnostic and therapeutic capacity of the health facility.

This new unit will have an area of 5,000 square meters of construction, distributed over two floors, and will be a fully digitized service, which will speed up the diagnostic process and reduce the printing of results and plates, among others currently being carried out.

With the new equipment, examinations can be carried out in any space of the tower and in a few moments the information will be available in the main console of the service to make the diagnosis to the patients.

The radiology service will have three mammograms with tomosynthesis and contrast media to obtain 3D images of the breast, thus improving the diagnosis of the patient. This will turn the medical center into the first CCSS hospital with access to this type of technology.

The unit will also have six conventional radiology rooms, two tomographs that will increase the production and diagnostic capacity of patients, as well as six ultrasound rooms.

Other equipment that will be in the new service will be a densitometer for the diagnosis and monitoring of patients with osteoporosis, an Orth pantograph for images of the orofacial part and an angiograph to perform most of the interventional radiology procedures.

The work will also have a report room for radiologists and residents with cutting-edge technology for reading and diagnosing patients, adequate spaces for administrative services and a session room.

Dr. Taciano Lemos Pires, general director of the Calderón Guardia hospital, said that this new service, which will be a reality in the short term, will significantly improve current conditions and positively impact the diagnosis and treatment process of the various diseases of patients that attends the health center. “This project will put the hospital at the forefront of service delivery,” he added.

The new East Tower of the Calderón Guardia hospital will have seven floors and the following services will be located there:

  • Hospitalization Obstetrics department.
  • Hospitalization Neonatology department.
  • Hospitalization Gynecology service.
  • Hospitalization Surgery service.
  • Hospitalization Medicine service.
  • Delivery rooms and support areas.
  • X-ray rooms and support areas.
  • Wardrobe service and support areas
  • Bone marrow transplant
  • Peripheral Kitchen
  • the new infrastructure will consist of 204 beds and 35 cots


The total cost of the work amounts to $ 82,204,097.00 and will allow the hospital to increase its resolution capacity by approximately 35% of the current one.
