Finding Fortuna

Finding Fortuna

After our incredible adventures in Monteverde, we drove to Fortuna near Arenal Volcano. For most adventurers this experience begins with a stunning drive around Lake Arenal offering many scenic views of both the lake and volcano.  PLEASE NOTE: if the top of the volcano is completely visible anytime during your trip, pull over immediately and take a picture – you just might not get another chance to see the glorious summit towering above the landscape at 1633 meters! To whet your appetite, below are a few places we think you have to visit during your time in this picturesque area:

Hotel Lomas Del Volcan

For the perfect place to stay, do not hesitate to stay at – Las Lomas Del Volcan – situated at the base of the volcano it is truly heaven on earth.  With 47 cabin style rooms and only 13km away from the volcano, you only need to look outside your front door/patio for an amazing view! Convenient parking, valet service if needed, super friendly and clean reception area, lively bar, delicious restaurant with fantastic service and awesome pool/hot tub plus plenty of hiking trails amongst the flora and fauna to satisfy your every want/need.

Sloth’s Territory Tour

This was simply amazing.  Located approximately 10 minutes away from Fortuna, this is a privately and family owned farm with abundant wildlife and of course what we all came looking for – the Sloths! Seconds from our tour start we saw our first of 9 sloths with the naked eye but used the guide’s telescope to see the baby clinging to mom.  River, farmland, banana and plantains round out this fantastic 2 hour tour.

La Fortuna Public Square

As in all towns across Costa Rica, the town square is a gathering place for all.  Statues and water fountains dot the park sharing historical notes, farmers sell crops from the back of their trucks and plenty of souvenir and ice cream shops fill those other needs. Get all your miscellaneous items and take a couple pictures up the main drag of the grand Arenal volcano.

Besides the few adventures listed above be sure to take advantage of ALL the area has to offer including; hot springs, white water rafting, ziplining, hiking, eco tours, souvenir collecting and much more. We cannot wait to go back again and experience more of the area!
